Wiebes claims a third Tour of Britain stage win

Lorena Wiebes claimed her third victory in four days at the Tour of Britain Women, winning the reduced-group sprint at the end of the 138.3-kilometre fourth stage from Llanidloes to Hay-on-Wye. The SD Worx-Protime rider finished ahead of Liane Lippert and race leader Kim Le Court-Pienaar after a demanding day through the hills of Wales.

The stage was far more selective than a conventional sprint day. A long series of attacks and climbs reduced the front of the race, while Lippert accelerated on Clyro Hill with Le Court-Pienaar following. Wiebes helped close the move, responded to further attacks in the final kilometres and still had enough speed to win the sprint in 3:41:13.

The bonus seconds also tightened the overall classification before the final stage. Le Court-Pienaar retained the leader's jersey, but her advantage fell to 24 seconds over Lippert and 29 over Wiebes. The Dutch sprinter therefore reaches the finale in Royal Leamington Spa with three stage victories and a mathematical chance of challenging for the overall title.
