Evenepoel survives a crash to win European gold by millimetres

Remco Evenepoel became European road race champion in Slovenia after beating Giulio Ciccone in a photo finish. The Belgian and the Italian broke clear with 36 kilometres remaining, but Evenepoel slid out on a corner, returned to the race and attacked again before Ciccone joined him at the front.

Ciccone opened the two-man sprint, yet Evenepoel came past him by the narrowest margin after 196.2 kilometres. Christian Scaroni completed an Italian double on the podium, 59 seconds behind, while Iván Romeo finished fifth at 1:16 as the best Spaniard. Primož Roglič crossed the line in tenth place.
