Peloton delays Il Lombardia start to demand safer racing
The riders at Il Lombardia remained on the start line in Bergamo for five minutes on 10 October, turning the final Monument of the season into a collective call for safer race routes. Remco Evenepoel took the microphone to explain the protest to spectators and organisers.
The action followed recent incidents involving vehicles on race courses, including the collision with a police motorbike at Tre Valli Varesine. Evenepoel also referred to the death of Finlay Tarling during the Volta ao Portugal this summer.
A joint statement, also shared by CPA president Adam Hansen, called on the UCI and organisers to improve how routes are secured and managed. The peloton then set off and raced normally. RCS Sport expressed support for the safety appeal.
